| Abstract: |
This second literacy packet from the Asia region has seven modules: Women and Regional Cooperation on Trade; Trade Intensification, Growth and Social Protection: The Southeast Asian Experience; Issues in Social Policy and Trade Policy; Social Policy and Trade in Agriculture; Social Policy and Trade in Textile and Clothing, Social Policy and Trade in Services; and Finding the Link Between Trade Policy and Social Policy.
Through the examination of the links between social policy and trade policy the study explores how women, as one of the most vulnerable groups in society, are - or are not - protected through social polices from poverty, discrimination, lack of social services and other trade related circumstances. The paper asserts that because trade policy is unconcerned with its effects on the day-to-day lives of women social policy must be responsive to the economy and ensure that larger goals are not compromised by trade policies. |
